This is the first video interview I’ve ever seen of Mary-Kate and Ashley’s biological mother "Jarnie" Jarnette Olsen. It’s from an episode of ABC News’ magazine show Prime Time Live, titled: Twins’ Peak - Entertainment Empire Of Mary-Kate, Ashley Olsen, aired on May 28, 1997.
Success
She seems so sweet in the interview, so similar to the girls did you notice? She was very clever in not letting herself become a stage mother. Instead of pushing them to succeed she encouraged them to stay as normal as possible. That philosophy guided them throughout their lives and careers to this day. It could even be said to be responsible for their success.
Sincerity
What set Mary-Kate and Ashley apart from other child stars was they stayed true to themselves, treating everything they did as just an extension of their lives, not a way to make more money. That gave them that elusive quality that even children can detect, sincerity.
Divorce
Sadly Jarnette and David Olsen divorced in 1996 after 18 years of marriage. It’s sad when this happens because it’s so hard on everyone. Your family is the core of your security and when your family breaks apart it is devastating. It may be the reason for Mary-Kate’s feelings of insecurity that led to her health problems years later.
Who said life was easy?
There are worse things out there to deal with than your parents getting divorced. Nevertheless it’s still very painful. The best way to deal with it is to talk but not necessarily to other family members. They’re emotionally involved and not trained to deal with emotional issues like this. Better to talk with a counselor who knows what to say to make you feel better.
Trivia: Did you know that Ashley’s middle name, Fuller, is actually her mothers maiden name?

Yes, I agree, her name was Jarnie Jones and her mother was Mary Jones. She danced ballet in Toluca Lake where she grew up. Perhaps Mary’s maiden name was Fuller? I’d love to see her again after all of these years–I danced with her and went to her house when I was very young.
Why is it that when I went to school with Jarnie, her last name was “Jones” not “Fuller”?
