When Phillip Lim found out Mary-Kate and Ashley would be expanding into the contemporary clothing market with their new label, Elizabeth and James, he was not amused.
Wow, how unfair.
Who is Phillip Lim and why is he so upset?
Phillip Lim was until recently an unknown women’s fashion designer.
After years of working in the shadow of others he is coming into his own and was awarded the prestigious CFDA’s Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in Womenswear.
He’s so upset because he thinks it’s unfair that celebrities like Mary-Kate and Ashley are entering the market and daring to compete with him.
He whines that they’re using their fame to sell their products and "legitimate" designers like him have no chance.
But wait, don’t designers use celebrity fame to help sell their products? All the time. Do you think he’d turn down the chance to have a celebrity wear one of his designs at an event? I don’t think so.
Hypocrisy + sour grapes = Phillip Lim.
I say take back that award and give it to an emerging talent who deserves it. Hint.

Phillip Lim is such a talented designer and if he did say that, I do think he has a good point, not necessarily about MK and Ashley Olsen, because I think they have some true designing talent, but there are a pretty high number of celebrities who just launch another pointless clothing line because they can. Also, I doubt Phillip Lim would say that. Lastly…Don’t say mean things about Phillip! He’s a very deserving and talented designer who has truly developed his own unique vision in the world of fashion…his pieces are beautiful!
If he is so talented and a great designer, he can compete with the famous stars…but he isn’t so he’s making this hate speech because he’s jealous and bitter. Stars like mk and ash are better designer than he is.
and besides, he should have known that LIFE IS UNFAIR ever since he was born….so stop mumbling about NOT HAVING FAIR TREATMENT!!!!
Do you have a link to anything where Phillip Lim is quoted as saying anything derogatory towards MK and Ashley? If not, I think this is just hearsay and I don’t believe it. He is a talented designer and I’m sure he would not feel threatened by these girls producing a clothing line.
i understand where he’s coming from. but i believe mk and a worked real hard to get to where they are now. they have great style too. if the public loves them, the fashion critics love them and they enjoy what they are doing, that’s all that matters. but i don’t think philip lim is lame. in some ways, he is right.

Phillip lim is a talented design! AWESOME at that. i can understand why its unfair. because .. well to designers like him, it is unfair. mk n ash are riding on their fame
philip lim is a really talented desinger (hardly unknown) that mk and a wear, they actually preseted him with this award. read the whole article, it was more a comment on how the industry is changing, not an attack on celebrity/designers. mk and a hosted the dinner for the swarovski nominees; i am sure there is no anomosity there and that they, as designers, are probably very aware of this dynamic and industry shift.
