Mlive.com - In July, after weeks of tests in the hospital, Maddy was diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma, a relatively uncommon cancer in children. She has only been back to her family's house in New Era for a few days at a time in between surgeries, hospital stays and rounds of chemotherapy at DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

On the rare occasions that her friends have been able to visit, whether at home, in the hospital and the two times she's made to school, she has to separate herself from them.

"Is my desk in the same place?" she asks one day.

Maddy's favorite TV show is "Price is Right," but "Full House" and "Step by Step" run a close second and third. Daddy teases her that he's never seen so many Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen movies in his life.
