Feds Officially Close Ledger InvestigationThat was fast.

After all the hoopla surrounding the subpoena for Mary-Kate Olsen to testify, the investigation into how Heath Ledger got his painkillers has been closed.

Prosecutors in the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan had been overseeing a Drug Enforcement Administration probe into whether the drugs were obtained illegally.

They nixed the investigation according to an official “because they don’t believe there’s a viable target” because no charges have been filed.

The DEA has obtained a subpoena in April that would have forced Mary-Kate to talk, but now that the case has been closed she’s off the hook.

The NYPD decided not to talk to Olsen once Heath’s death was ruled accidental, but the DEA decided to open an investigation into where he got the painkillers.

Heath had prescriptions for three of the five drugs found in his system - Xanax, Valium and Restoril, but not OxyContin or Vicodin.

According to TMZ, there was a lot of inter-agency rival between the NYPD and the DEA.

They claim the U.S. Attorney’s office was “appalled” by the DEA’s “bogus” investigation and basically shut it down as soon as they could.

The case could be re-opened if evidence of a crime emerges.
