Ashley Interview Transcript: Rove Australia June 30, 2004
Thanks to Renee***
Rove- Let?s say hello to our next guest. With her sister, she is one of Hollywood?s most powerful women and has managed to cram a lifetime into only 18 years. Since her debut at the age of 9 months as part of the TV show Full House, she?s now moved onto her first feature film, New York Minute. It?s out around Australia and New Zealand on Thursday. Here?s a look:
(clip shown from New York Minute ? the one where Ashley starts hyperventilating and Mary-Kate slaps her)
Rove- Say hello to Ashley Olsen.
Ashley- Hello (laughs) Hi (laughs) (laughs again)
Rove- Now, it?s lovely to see you. You look wonderful. How ya doing?
Ashley- Thank-you. I?m good, thank-you. I?m sorry, you know, I couldn?t be there.
Rove- That?s alright. I was going to say obviously a lot of people are aware that you and your lovely sister Mary-Kate were going to join us in our studio tonight, couldn?t happen. A lot of people know why. But fill us in. How are things going?
Ashley- Things are good. Umm? you know, things are good. Things are good the way they are right now.
Rove- And how?s Mary-Kate doing?
Ashley- She?s, she?s good, you know, you know. It?s actually kind of perfect timing. I know we were supposed to be there and you know umm?be there with you guys but it?s kind of perfect timing you know. She just needs to think of herself right now and take care of herself right now, you know, before she can, you know, go ahead, you know, and please other people so it?s kind of worked out perfectly. ^ove- But it must be good too because obviously you do have the film to promote but it?s obviously something that she felt she needed to do, so obviously a tough decision to make.
Ashley- Right. So I?m here, you know, and she?s here in spirit supporting the film.
Rove- And tough for you, for a sister anyway but also being a twin seeing your sister going through something like this.
Ashley- Yeah. I think, you know, it?s hard (pic shown of Mary-Kate and Ashley getting their star) but at the same time, you know, we?re so thankful that all of our fans and umm and everyone are being really supportive so it?s good.
Rove- And so also mentioning the fans. Is it something you worry about with Mary-Kate going through this. You two are role models, her as well and you individually. Is it something you worry about how this might reflect to people you look up to the two of you?
Ashley- You know, it?s actually kind of funny that you say that, you know, more now than ever, you know, have we heard from our fans saying, you know, it?s, you know, such a brave thing that she?s done and you know, so many people suffer from the same thing, you know. It not just, umm?, you know, we?ve gotten so much support from people because this is an issue that people don?t necessarily always talk about or umm?I don?t know, it?s just a big issue to the fact that she?s take responsibility, you know, for it and taking care of herself and I think people really respect that.
Rove- And also good on you. I know this must be tough although it?s Mary-Kate who?s physically going through it, you?re the one who?s putting up the firing line, in a sense. So thank-you for taking the time to chat.
Ashley- (laughs) No problem. Thank-you.
Rove- OK, so let?s move on and give her our best won?t you?
Ashley- OK.
Rove- let?s move on to brighter things. You graduated highschool, I don?t know, you call it college?do you?what?.?
Ashley- Wha? oh yeah. We graduated highschool and we?re going to college.
Rove- Going to college. We call it university. But about to start up?
Ashley- Going to college
Rove- In August you go there. What are you hoping to study?
Ashley- Umm?you know, I hope to study, you know, so many things. I think I?m signed up for Italian right now and to take a cinema class. Umm?so there?s many things so ummm? and you have to take like a writing seminar and a couple of other classes but umm? so I kinda want to take this time to study things, you know, that I wouldn?t, you know, get the opportunity to study it I, you know, didn?t go to college.
Rove- And also because you completed your senior year while you were making New York Minute. That must?ve been very tough.
Ashley- Yeah, umm?
Rove- What are you trying to do? Run yourself into the ground?
Ashley- (laughs) No. It was tough but at the same time this is all I know. I?ve been doing this since I was 9 months old and starting on, you know, Full House. Umm?this is all we kind of know, you know. We work and we do school. So it was a little more difficult because we had to take on, you know, a lot of responsibility doing the movie, umm, but you know, it?s all we kind of know.
Rove- And tell us a little about the movie. You play sisters, surprise surprise, it?s hard when you?re an identical twin not to do anything else.
Ashley- Right. Well, it?s an action comedy that takes place in 24 hours and umm, you know, it?s a great family movie, you know. Everyone in the family can go see it and enjoy, you know, part of the film or connect with a part of the film. My character is very, umm, uptight, and you know, kinda Type A personality, germ-a-phobic. Mary-Kate?s character is kind of you know rock and roll girl, and a little more rebellious but they are both very driven characters at the same time.
Rove- And what I thought was very gutsy, you looked like you did most of your own stunts and there?s a few. Falling from high places and crowd surfing in a miniskirt.
Ashley- (laughs) Yeah, we basically did all the stunts, umm, except for the stuff we contractually could do because they were too dangerous. (laughs) But we tried to do everything we could and we had fun. I go to learn how to drive a car backwards, you know, swerving in and out of cones, you know, falling out of buildings and Mary-Kate got to play the drums and drive a stick shift sp yeah, we learned, you know, quite a few things in this movie.
Rove- And I did mention earlier very gutsy because there?s a scene where the two of you are crowd surfing. Mary-Kate has shorts on but you have a miniskirt on and I have to think any skirt (Ashley laughs) from a guys perspective, I?ve never worn a miniskirt, well not in public anyway and I still know that is would be tough to do.
Ashley- Well if you watch the scene carefully you see my hands constantly keeping my skirt down and I think that was throughout the whole movie (clip shown of them crowd surfing) me grabbing, you know, different parts making sure that nothing was gonna fall off or fly up so, it was very (did quite catch last word)
Rove- And no wandering hands I hope.
Ashley- Right, no, no, no. We made sure of that. Stunt guys to catch us.
Rove- Excellent. Well the film New York Minute is out on Thursday in Australia and New Zealand. Thank-you so much for chatting to us and of course as I mentioned all the best to your sister, Mary-Kate.
Ashley Olsen ladies and gentlemen.
Ashley- (laughs) Bye.
